A summary of Part X (Section8) in Friedrich Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy. The platonic dialogue, developed in tribute to Socrates, violates his precepts Nietzsche relates that in his last days, the philosopher took up the
Nietzsche is a philosopher-poet, and they were too! But there is also an even finer connection, observed by Nietzsche, which places him unmistakably in their company. Unlike Plato or Aristotle or other philosophers who came after them and all of whom Nietzsche calls “hybrid types,” the pre-Socratics are “pure type” specimens, and so is Nietzsche. Reading Nietzsche’s explanation of how the early Greek pre-Socratics stand out and differ from those who succeeded them (in his 1872-1874 The Pre-Platonic Philosophers, by Friedrich Nietzsche (Urbana, IL: University of Illinois Press, 2001); Paul Bishop, ed., Nietzsche and Antiquity: His Reaction and Response to the Classical Tradition (Rochester, NY: Camden House, 2004); and, most recently, Enrico Müller, Die Griechen im Denken Nietzsches (Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2005). Fortunately, Greg Whitlock's translation of Nietzsche's The Pre-Platonic Philosophers gives us reason to hope that this dam may soon burst.1 The Pre-Platonic Philosophers — composed of Nietzsche's somewhat unevenly polished notes from a lecture course he first gave in 1869 (then repeated three more times between 1872 and 1876, revising and elaborating the text)—appeared in complete form in German only in 1995, in the justly cele- brated critical edition of his complete works begun by During his career as a professor of Greek in Basel, Friedrich Nietzsche lectured, among other subjects, on The Pre-Platonic Philosophers; and he prepared an essay on Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks, which remained, however, unfinished. This essay focuses on and attempts to uncover the truly radical character of Nietzsche’s early “philological” work, specifically asking after the benefit he claims the study of classical culture should have for our present, late-modern historical moment.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of Christianity and traditional morality. He was interested in the enhancement of individual and cultural health, and believed in life, creativity, power, and the realities of the world we live in, rather than those situated in a world beyond.
